Now is the best time to prune a Cherry or Plum tree, a two month window between late June and late August.
Cherries and Plums belong to a genus of trees and shrubs known as Prunus. This genus can also be referred to as ‘stone fruits’ (they have a stone in the middle of the fruit, not pips, like an apple or pear).
As a genus they are especially susceptible to Bacterial Canker and Silver Leaf disease (a fungal infection). Both of these diseases can cause the ‘die back’ of branches and, in severe cases, the whole tree.
By pruning during the summer period, you can take advantage of two issues: firstly, the tree is actively growing (aiding a strengthened immune system that is better equipped to combat infection); secondly, the pathogens (diseases) are less virulent and widespread in winter (reducing the risk of infection).
It is always advisable to seek professional advice from an Arborist when it comes to tree pruning. Pruning at the wrong time could prove detrimental to the health of a cherished tree.
